Festival Overview
Shoton Festival in Lhasa opens with one of the city’s most charged public religious moments: the Thangka unveiling at Drepung Monastery before the day fully brightens. From there, the festival stretches across central Lhasa into Norbulingka, the Potala Palace area, and the old city around Jokhang Temple and Barkhor, where devotion, social gathering, and Tibetan opera sit side by side. It feels less like a single event than a week in which pilgrimage, monastery life, park gatherings, and public performance all become visible at once.
