Festival Overview
Gozan no Okuribi marks the close of Obon in Kyoto with a ritual that unfolds across the entire city rather than within a festival ground. As darkness falls on August 16, enormous fire symbols appear on the surrounding mountains, most famously the Daimonji character overlooking eastern Kyoto. Residents and visitors gather along the Kamo River, on bridges, and in neighborhoods with clear sightlines toward the hills. The event is less about entertainment than shared observation. For a short period, daily city life slows as attention shifts toward the mountains and the symbolic farewell to ancestral spirits.
