Festival Overview
A musician leans toward a radio microphone in Helena.
There is no audience inside the studio large enough to explain the importance of the moment. The real audience is scattered across the Arkansas and Mississippi Delta, listening from farms, homes, workshops and towns reached by the signal.
King Biscuit Blues Festival is a multi-day October celebration held in historic downtown Helena beside the Mississippi River. Main-stage performances on the levee are joined by smaller stages, street musicians, food vendors, arts and crafts, community events and the distinctive camping culture of Tent City.
The festival takes its name from King Biscuit Time, the Helena radio programme that began broadcasting live blues on KFFA in 1941. Sonny Boy Williamson II and Robert Lockwood Jr. were among the musicians whose performances traveled across the Delta, introducing listeners to artists they might otherwise never have encountered.
The festival arrived decades later.
By then, the music had already left Helena and entered the world.
