Festival Overview
Knoxville gathers around the Tennessee River beneath the ridges of East Tennessee, with an ornate historic theater district, compact downtown grid, Old City rail corridors, churches, galleries, and former industrial spaces. Big Ears activates those rooms with music that resists easy categories: contemporary classical, jazz, drone, folk, electronic work, improvisation, sound art, and collaborations created for attentive listening.
The city is not simply accommodation between concerts. Walking from the Tennessee Theatre to a church, warehouse, museum, or intimate club changes the acoustic and architectural frame of each performance.
Audiences build personal routes through the program, accepting conflicts and discoveries as part of the design. The result feels less like a festival compound than an extended act of listening to both artists and Knoxville itself.
