Festival Overview
Rochester welcomes spring through scent. Highland Park's famous lilac collection rises across rolling lawns and garden paths, and the Rochester Lilac Festival turns peak bloom into a citywide ritual of walking, smelling, listening, and lingering. More than a thousand shrubs and a remarkable range of varieties create colors from white and pale blush to saturated purple, but fragrance is the element photographs cannot carry home. Music stages, artisans, food vendors, races, and family activity broaden the celebration, yet the horticultural collection remains its heart. The park was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, and its slopes give visitors a graceful sequence of framed views and sudden garden rooms. Rochester's long winter makes the first lush weeks feel especially earned. Travelers do not simply attend a fair beside flowers; they enter a landscape where botanical stewardship, neighborhood memory, and the relief of spring have matured together.
