This Tohoku summer festival route connects three of northern Japan’s most celebrated traditions in one continuous southbound journey. Begin at the Aomori Nebuta Festival, where enormous illuminated floats depicting warriors and legendary figures move through central Aomori alongside haneto dancers, drums, flutes and festival chants.
Continue to Akita for the Kanto Festival, a remarkable display of balance and skill. Performers lift lantern-covered bamboo poles designed to resemble ripening stalks of rice, balancing them on their hands, shoulders, foreheads and hips as crowds gather along the city’s main avenue.
The route concludes at the Sendai Tanabata Festival. Elaborate streamers and handcrafted paper decorations fill the city’s covered shopping arcades, creating a colorful and more leisurely finale after the energetic nighttime events in Aomori and Akita.
