This winter itinerary combines three distinctive seasonal experiences in Switzerland and France. Begin at Montreux Noël, where Christmas stalls, festive lights and alpine scenery line the shores of Lake Geneva. Continue by train to Lyon for the Fête des Lumières, when illuminated buildings, public squares and large-scale art installations transform the city after dark. The route concludes in Strasbourg, home to one of Europe’s oldest and most celebrated Christmas markets.

The journey follows a logical northward route, with no flights or unnecessary backtracking between destinations. Each stop offers a different side of winter in Europe: lakeside festivities in Montreux, contemporary light art in Lyon and traditional Alsatian Christmas markets in Strasbourg.

Seven nights in Lyon provide time for the festival’s busiest evenings as well as the city beyond the light installations. Explore traditional bouchons, major museums, Roman sites and the Renaissance streets of Vieux Lyon, with quieter days built in after late festival nights.

Five nights in Strasbourg allow ample time to visit the markets around the UNESCO-listed Grande Île, explore smaller squares away from the busiest areas and enjoy the city’s canals and half-timbered neighborhoods after dark. Travelers can also add a day trip to an Alsace wine village without shortening their Strasbourg stay.
