Festival Overview
A door opens inside a former furniture factory on Peiraios Street.
The audience enters beneath concrete beams and exposed industrial walls. Onstage, a director dismantles an old story, dancers test the limits of the human body, or musicians build a language that did not exist when the building still contained desks and machinery. Athens has spent millennia accumulating history. Here, it uses that history as material.
Several evenings later, another audience leaves the capital. The road crosses the Isthmus of Corinth and continues through the mountains of the Argolid. By the time they reach the Sanctuary of Asklepios, the city has disappeared. They climb the stone tiers of the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus and wait for words first spoken thousands of years ago to enter new voices.
The Athens Epidaurus Festival is Greece’s leading summer performing-arts festival, presenting theatre, dance, music and interdisciplinary work across Athens and the ancient theatres of Epidaurus. Founded in the 1950s, it brings Greek and international artists into spaces ranging from industrial buildings to one of antiquity’s most celebrated theatres.
It is not one event in one location. It is a season of individual performances connected by a larger cultural journey.
In Athens, the festival asks what performance can become.
At Epidaurus, it asks what an inherited work can mean when another generation speaks it.
The distance between those questions is where the festival begins.
