Festival Overview
Ouagadougou becomes the capital of African cinema during FESPACO, when filmmakers, actors, students, critics, technicians, and local audiences fill theaters and cultural spaces across the Burkinabè capital. Heat, dust, motorbikes, posters, debate, and packed screenings give the biennial gathering a public intensity far removed from a closed industry market. The competition spans work from Africa and its diasporas, while the Étalon de Yennenga carries immense symbolic weight. Here cinema is discussed as art, memory, livelihood, education, and political voice. The city does not merely host the festival; its audiences and streets supply the urgency that distinguishes it.
