Festival Overview
Fête de l’Escalade returns Geneva’s Old Town to the winter of 1602. Candlelight catches on stone walls, soldiers and townspeople in period dress move through the steep streets, and historical scenes appear in squares that still follow the city’s medieval plan. The celebration commemorates Geneva’s defeat of a surprise Savoyard attack, but it survives because residents continue to perform the story rather than simply display it.
During the main weekend, the Old Town becomes a living civic stage. Families, reenactors, musicians, and spectators share the same narrow routes, with the largest processions drawing thousands into the streets after dark.
