Festival Overview
Kawagoe Festival transforms the historic streets of “Little Edo” into one of Japan’s finest traditional float festivals, where towering lantern-lit festival floats roll through beautifully preserved Edo-period neighborhoods accompanied by music, dancers, and centuries-old ritual. Centered around Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine and the city’s famous Kurazukuri Warehouse District, the festival celebrates local heritage through magnificent handcrafted floats, lively street processions, and dramatic hikkawase performances in which opposing floats meet and compete through music and performance. Surrounded by historic architecture that survived from Japan’s Edo era, the festival offers visitors the rare opportunity to experience one of the country’s most authentic urban celebrations in its original setting.
