Festival Overview
A carved radish begins changing as soon as it is cut. Under the Zócalo lights, thin edges curl while entire villages, dancers, animals and devotional scenes remain briefly intact. Visitors move past them in a controlled stream because the works cannot wait for a quieter week.
Noche de Rábanos brings horticulturists and artisans into competition using radish, flor inmortal and totomoxtle. The materials differ, as do the skills: carving moisture-rich roots, assembling dried flowers and shaping corn husk into figures and scenes.
The event lasts one day within Oaxaca’s crowded Christmas season. The exhibition is free, but access costs time. Enter the official viewing flow early, eat before joining it and allow several nights in Oaxaca so the city is not reduced to one long queue around its square.
