ROUTE OVERVIEW

📄 Route description

This Tohoku summer festival route connects three of northern Japan’s most celebrated traditions in one continuous southbound journey. Begin at the Aomori Nebuta Festival, where enormous illuminated floats depicting warriors and legendary figures move through central Aomori alongside haneto dancers, drums, flutes and festival chants.

Continue to Akita for the Kanto Festival, a remarkable display of balance and skill. Performers lift lantern-covered bamboo poles designed to resemble ripening stalks of rice, balancing them on their hands, shoulders, foreheads and hips as crowds gather along the city’s main avenue.

The route concludes at the Sendai Tanabata Festival. Elaborate streamers and handcrafted paper decorations fill the city’s covered shopping arcades, creating a colorful and more leisurely finale after the energetic nighttime events in Aomori and Akita.

Aomori, Akita and Sendai can be linked efficiently by train without backtracking. The Aomori-to-Akita journey is the longer regional transfer, while direct Akita Shinkansen services connect Akita with Sendai.

This is a fast-paced itinerary, with nearly every day dedicated to a festival or an intercity journey. Travel light, keep transfer mornings free and avoid adding distant day trips. Festival dates are traditionally concentrated in early August, but schedules can change, so confirm official programs and reserve trains and hotels well in advance.

    TRAVEL LOGISTICS

    • Use an open-jaw plan where possible: arrive through Aomori Airport or by rail from Tokyo, then depart from Sendai Airport or continue south by Tohoku Shinkansen.
    • Aomori Airport requires a ground transfer into central Aomori. Do not schedule a same-evening arrival without substantial margin for baggage, road conditions, and festival demand.
    • International travelers using Tokyo should consider arriving in Japan at least one night before August 2 so a delayed long-haul flight does not erase the first festival stop.
    Search Flights
    • Aomori to Akita is the route’s longest regional transfer. Use a reserved limited-express itinerary and verify the current timetable before booking because service patterns can change between annual schedules.
    • Akita to Sendai is served by direct Komachi trains on the Akita Shinkansen. Reserve the August 6 departure because festival demand affects both cities.
    • Central festival areas in Aomori, Akita, and Sendai are best handled by rail, local transit, and walking. Road closures make taxis least reliable near evening performance windows.
    • Travel with manageable luggage. Station lockers and hotel baggage storage may fill quickly during the overlapping Tohoku festival period.
    Get Transport
    • Aomori Nebuta is held annually August 2–7; this route uses its August 2–3 opening-night format before moving west.
    • Akita Kanto Matsuri is held annually August 3–6; August 4–5 provides two evening performances and access to daytime festival context.
    • Sendai Tanabata is held annually August 6–8; the itinerary reaches Sendai for the complete festival window.
    • This is a high-intensity seven-day itinerary with no empty recovery day. Morning transfers, midday rest, hydration, and early hotel reservations are essential parts of the plan.

    SAFETY

    • August heat and humidity remain serious even in northern Japan. Use midday cooling breaks, carry water and electrolytes, and reduce sightseeing before evening programs.
    • Aomori’s moving floats and dancers require strict respect for barriers and steward instructions. Visitors joining as haneto should follow the official participation and costume rules.
    • Akita’s tall lantern poles can sway or fall during performances. Remain inside designated spectator areas and never cross into the performance avenue without instruction.
    • Sendai’s arcades create slow pedestrian compression beneath delicate decorations. Step fully aside before stopping for photographs and establish a meeting point outside the busiest corridor.
