Festivaletteratura began in 1997 through a citizen-led initiative inspired partly by literary festivals in the British Isles. It quickly became a Mantuan institution supported by local organizations, businesses, cultural spaces, and a large volunteer corps, many of them young people arriving from across Italy. Its understanding of literature is deliberately expansive, bringing novelists and poets into conversation with scientists, historians, artists, musicians, translators, journalists, and children.

Mantua’s Renaissance fabric is not decorative packaging. The compact city allows intellectual life to become visible in public, with readers crossing the same squares as authors and volunteers. The event demonstrates how a literary festival can function as temporary civic infrastructure rather than a sequence of promotional appearances.

Stay inside Mantua, book a few essential events, and defend blank space in the programme. Follow one unfamiliar voice, one place-based walk, and one conversation that continues beyond its numbered slot.
