Festival Overview
For several autumn days, Bhutan’s capital organizes itself around sacred dance. Families arrive at the festival ground beside Tashichho Dzong in brilliant gho and kira, monks and trained lay dancers enter in masks, and the city’s administrative center becomes a public classroom of Vajrayana Buddhism.
The capital setting gives this Tshechu its particular tension. Government offices, new neighborhoods, traffic, cafés, and mobile phones surround a ritual form measured in inherited gestures. The celebration does not deny modern Thimphu; it shows how national identity is carried through it.
