Festival Overview
Before dawn, a votive candle is lifted and its weight becomes visible in the bearer’s hands. The Feast of Saint Agatha is Catania’s public Catholic celebration of its patron saint, centered on wax offerings, Cathedral rites, monumental Candelore and long processions carrying the saint’s reliquary through the historic city.
Catania does not describe devotion only through words. Wax, silver, wood, rope, shoulders and hours of movement give it mass. In a city repeatedly shaped by fire, lava and rebuilding, the feast asks what people are willing to bear together—and what obligations come with carrying a saint through her own city.
