Festival Overview
The Tour de France passes each roadside once, often in moments, yet spectators build an entire day around receiving it. An empty road becomes a temporary community through chairs, bicycles, food, flags, rumor and waiting. The publicity caravan announces approach, but the landscape and people have already made the venue.
This imbalance is the Tour’s central truth. The riders provide the climax; anticipation gives that climax meaning. A mountain, village or open field changes how the race is understood because terrain shapes both competition and the spectator’s effort to arrive.
Do not attempt to see the whole Tour. Choose one stage, one landscape and one reason to stand there. Depth begins when the road stops being a viewing platform and becomes the destination.
