Festival Overview
Amsterdam Light Festival uses winter darkness to turn canals, bridges and waterside streets into an open-air exhibition. International and local artists create works for public space, where reflections, boat movement, weather and canal architecture become part of each installation.
The central planning decision is how to see it. Walking gives control: you can pause, read, photograph and approach works from several angles. A cruise provides a continuous water-level sequence and shows how pieces address the canals themselves. Neither format replaces the other, and travelers with two evenings should do both.
The route changes by edition, so the final map must govern lodging, dining and transport choices. The art may be visible without charge from public space, while paid walking interpretation and official cruises support the nonprofit foundation. Do not treat the festival as background decoration during an ordinary canal stroll; use the app, audio or guide to understand what the artists are doing.
