Festival Overview
The first thing Dolní Vítkovice gives the festival is scale.
Blast furnaces rise behind the stages. Pipes cross overhead. Towers, conveyors and former energy buildings divide the grounds into spaces that still appear connected by some enormous industrial purpose. After dark, lights move across the steel without making it look weightless.
Colours of Ostrava is a multiday, multigenre music and arts festival held inside this former coal-mining and iron-production complex in Ostrava. Its programme combines internationally recognized musicians with performers from across Czechia and around the world, while theatre, workshops, family activities and the Meltingpot discussion forum extend the experience beyond concerts.
Dolní Vítkovice once joined extraction and production on a remarkable scale. Coal was mined, converted into coke and used to produce iron within the same industrial area. The complex shaped work, neighborhoods and generations of life before production ended.
Ostrava did not remove the machinery to prove that the city had changed. It preserved the site and changed what the structures were allowed to hold. Education entered former industrial buildings. Visitors climbed above furnaces. Music, conversation and public life occupied ground designed for labor.
The festival does not cover the old city with color.
It allows Ostrava to use its inherited weight differently.
