Festival Overview
Before the main stages become loud, a child is holding an instrument for the first time.
The fingers do not yet know where to go. A volunteer demonstrates the shape of a chord or the way a drumstick should rest in the hand. Nearby, Tampa musicians prepare for afternoon sets while nationally touring artists wait for the larger evening crowds.
Gasparilla Music Festival is a nonprofit, multi-day music festival bringing local performers, national artists and regional food vendors together in downtown Tampa. Its programme crosses rock, hip-hop, roots music, electronic music, country, soul, Latin music and other genres rather than asking one sound to represent the city.
The festival is distinct from Gasparilla Pirate Fest. It borrows Tampa’s familiar Gasparilla name, but it is not the pirate invasion, parade or collection of winter celebrations surrounding it. This is a separate ticketed music event with its own schedule and civic purpose.
That purpose continues after the stages close. The Gasparilla Music Foundation supports music education, instrument donations and repairs, and paid opportunities for area musicians. A weekend of public performances helps place instruments into schools and keeps local artists working.
The child tests the chord again.
This time, the instrument answers.
