Festival Overview
Hokitika Wildfoods Festival turns Cass Square into a one-day West Coast test of appetite, humor, resourcefulness, and theatrical courage. Wild game, seafood, foraged plants, local staples, and deliberate novelty share the stalls with costumes, music, competitions, and a town prepared to laugh at both bravery and hesitation.
The narrative is the boundary between food and dare. A huhu grub or unconventional animal part attracts attention, but venison, whitebait, seafood, gorse-flower ideas, and bush ingredients connect the provocation to ways West Coasters have hunted, gathered, improvised, and made use of an abundant landscape.
Hokitika gives the event a scale larger cities could not reproduce. The festival occupies a civic square within walking distance of river, sea, shops, galleries, and jade-carving culture, so the food challenge remains attached to a real town.
