Festival Overview
Monterey curves around a bay known for marine life, fog, fishing history, and a coastal landscape that has long drawn artists and travelers. The Monterey Jazz Festival gathers at the Monterey County Fair & Event Center, where oak-shaded grounds and multiple venues create a campus devoted to listening without a single headline stage.
Since its beginnings in the late 1950s, the event has joined major jazz figures, emerging artists, commissions, education, blues, Latin jazz, and experimental work within one weekend.
The fairgrounds carry history of their own, but the festival remains forward-facing when young musicians share space with masters. Cool evening air, close rooms, outdoor stages, and conversations between sets give the gathering an atmosphere both serious and generous.
