Festival Overview
Lisbon is a city of steep calçada streets, tiled facades, yellow trams, river light, abandoned grandeur, and neighborhoods that can feel cinematic before any screen appears.
MOTELX uses that atmosphere for an international horror film festival centered on Cinema São Jorge and the Avenida da Liberdade area, with screenings, premieres, retrospectives, talks, competitions, and late-night genre culture. Horror becomes a way to explore Portuguese filmmaking as well as global anxieties, from supernatural tradition to body horror, satire, and political fear.
The venue’s classic cinema scale keeps the audience close, while the city outside supplies shadowed lanes and ornate architecture that suit the mood without becoming a theme park. The strongest visit balances intense viewing with daylight Lisbon.
