📄 Route description
This Japan summer festival itinerary follows the country’s southern rail corridor through three major July celebrations. Begin in Fukuoka with Hakata Gion Yamakasa, a centuries-old festival that culminates in the pre-dawn Oiyama race. Neighborhood teams carry enormous decorated kakiyama floats through the historic streets of Hakata as spectators gather along the route.
Continue by high-speed train to Kyoto for Gion Matsuri, one of Japan’s most important traditional festivals. Although events take place throughout July, the itinerary focuses on the Saki Matsuri period. During the evenings before the procession, central Kyoto becomes a pedestrian festival zone filled with illuminated floats, music, food stalls and displays of historic family treasures. The highlight is the grand Yamahoko float procession, traditionally held on July 17.
The journey concludes in Osaka at Tenjin Matsuri. Centered on Osaka Tenmangu Shrine, the festival combines religious ceremonies, a large land procession and an evening river parade. Illuminated boats and fireworks over the Okawa River create a fitting finale to the route.
Fukuoka, Kyoto and Osaka are connected by a straightforward high-speed rail journey with no unnecessary backtracking. Several flexible days between the major events provide time for sightseeing, laundry and recovery from Japan’s summer heat and humidity.
