Festival Overview
Durga Puja in Kolkata unfolds as a citywide circuit of worship, art, and sleepless neighborhood pride. You move from temple-style worship spaces and community puja grounds to major themed pandal installations, with Kumartuli idol-making district sitting at the emotional beginning of it all, where the goddess first takes form before appearing across the city for darshan. What makes Kolkata different is that the ritual life never gets pushed aside by the spectacle: dhak beats, incense, offerings, queues for a glimpse of the idol, and families dressed for evening visits all sit inside the same night.
