Festival Overview
Inti Raymi carries Cusco’s sacred geography from Qorikancha through the former Inca ceremonial center and uphill to Saqsaywaman. Actors, musicians, dancers, civic institutions, and enormous audiences stage a modern reconstruction of the Inca festival honoring Inti, the sun.
The narrative is reclamation through performance. The ceremony is not an untouched survival from antiquity; its modern form was created in the twentieth century from chronicles, scholarship, theatre, and Cusqueño cultural ambition. That constructed quality does not cancel its meaning—it reveals how a city makes history publicly present.
June surrounds the main ceremony with school parades, dance, music, and other civic observances. Seeing those events first prevents the visitor from isolating Inti Raymi as a single export performance and reveals a city engaged in a longer season of self-representation.
