Festival Overview
Iloilo City greets the January festival season with drums that seem to travel through the downtown street grid before performers appear. Dinagyang combines devotion to the Santo Niño with highly rehearsed dance competition, elaborate body paint and costume, percussion, civic pageantry, and the public pride of participating groups. The event has roots in local religious practice and a history of festival reinterpretation, so its strongest experience holds faith and performance together without confusing one for the other. Historic streets, churches, plazas, food traditions, and the city's reputation for hospitality give the spectacle a distinctly Ilonggo setting.
