Festival Overview
Ulaanbaatar in winter is a capital of coal-smoke haze, brilliant blue sky, apartment districts, monasteries, ger neighborhoods, and cold capable of governing every movement. Tsagaan Sar, the Lunar New Year known as the White Moon, is primarily a family and household celebration rather than a public festival staged for travelers.
Homes are cleaned, elders are honored, people exchange formal greetings, and tables fill with buuz, dairy foods, sweets, and carefully arranged ceremonial offerings. The city quiets and family networks become the true geography.
A traveler cannot responsibly assume access to private rituals. The meaningful approach is to learn through museums, public cultural programs, a trusted host relationship, and respect for the holiday's emphasis on kinship, renewal, and seniority.
