Festival Overview
Before the first guest arrives, a parking lot has become a neighborhood.
Steel frames rise beside smokers. Temporary kitchens acquire counters, lights and fire extinguishers. Teams hang signs over entrances that did not exist days earlier. Inside the larger tents, dining rooms, bars, stages and dance floors begin to appear.
The World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Contest is an invitation-only barbecue competition and public entertainment event held at NRG Park before the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Hundreds of teams compete across categories that include brisket, ribs, chicken, Dutch oven dessert, Go Texan entries and an open contest.
General admission opens the contest grounds, public music areas, the carnival and the official public barbecue service. It does not provide entry to the competing teams’ private tents or access to their submitted barbecue. Team wristbands are distributed privately and ordinarily cannot be purchased.
That distinction should be understood before the ticket is bought.
The judges evaluate what comes from the smokers.
Houston remembers who built the table around them.
